# Pennyweight

> Pennyweight is a pricing engine for independent jewelers and small studios. It ties material costs to live metal spot prices (gold, silver, platinum, palladium), applies your labor and overhead, runs your markup rules, and produces multi-channel prices (retail, wholesale, distributor, custom) that update automatically when the market moves. ## Product summary

- **Core idea:** prices are *computed*, not stored. Every price is recalculated at render time from current spot, your labor rate, your overhead, and your markup rules. Change one input — labor rate, markup multiplier, channel percentage — and every affected piece across every channel updates instantly.
- **Metals supported:** gold (10K through 24K), sterling silver, platinum, palladium. Purity factors are built into the engine.
- **Weight units:** grams, DWT (pennyweight), or troy ounces.
- **Currency:** USD today; the engine itself is currency-agnostic and other currencies are on the roadmap.
- **Channels:** retail, wholesale, consignment, distributor, plus custom channels — each defined as a percentage of retail (the keystone model).
- **Not accounting software:** Pennyweight answers "what should I charge for this piece?" Pair it with QuickBooks, Wave, or Xero for bookkeeping.
- **Built on:** Clerk (auth), Supabase (storage), Vercel (hosting). Records are isolated per account at the database level.

## Pricing

- **Free trial:** 14 days of full Maker access. Card on file at signup; auto-converts to paid Maker at day 14 unless cancelled. Cancel any time before day 14 in the billing drawer and you won't be charged. Cancelled accounts drop to read-only — every item, material, vendor, and snapshot stays visible and exportable, calculator and exports keep working, and your data never disappears.
- **Maker — $12/month or $120/year (~17% off):** up to 250 products, spot-linked materials library, per-category markup and gem brackets, labor/overhead/components tracking, multi-channel pricing, daily price snapshots, CSV export, Claude-powered features.
- **Studio — $35/month or $350/year:** everything in Maker, unlimited products, priority support, reserved capacity for team seats and API access (lights up when those ship).
- **Forward + reverse calculator:** free forever, even after a trial expires.
- **Cancellation:** self-serve, instant. Keep full access through the end of the billing period; data stays exportable after that.

## Who it's for

Independent jewelers and small studios who work with real metal weight and currently price out of a spreadsheet — or have no system at all. Not aimed at Etsy resellers or pure-craft makers without metal content; the live-market hook is the main reason to use Pennyweight, and pieces with no metal weight don't benefit from it.
